You might remember this. There was a huge, 7.1 earthquake where I live in Christchurch, New Zealand in September last year. Since then we have experienced thousands of aftershocks (earthquake that are like echos of the big one) of various magnitudes. But yesterday another one struck, but it was bigger than any other we've felt before. 6.3 on the richter scale. It was very close to the city and only 5kms deep, which meant that it felt much, much stronger than the numbers indicate.
While the September earthquake struck at 4:30am, while everyone was in bed (and nobody died, which was a miracle) - this one happened at 1pm, while everyone was on lunch break or working. Many buildings have collapsed, trapping people inside. Rubble, verandas and pieces of buildings have fallen, some crushing people who stood sheltering in the streets. So far the confirmed death toll is 55 (identified) people - but that is expected to rise, perhaps into the hundreds.
My family and I are ok. But we know that the likelihood of us knowing someone who is seriously injured or worse is really, really high. It's so hard, watching TV recognizing buildings and places that we know so well, utterly destroyed.
So please pray for Christchurch and New Zealand.
And, I don't want to preach, but please think about this: do you know where you're gonna go when you die? What if your building collapsed on top of you tomorrow?
